Lee Roy Selmon has a history that combines family scholarship football and volunteer work in the community. In the first place the Selmons were raised by Lucious Semon and his wife Jessie on the farm close to Eufala in Oklahoma as the youngest of their nine children. Another reason for his football career was that Selmon is the youngest of three brothers who played with Oklahoma. The three brothers were all All-Americans. The year 1973 was the first time Lee Roy and Lucious Jr. Dewey were the starters for one year. Lee Roy has won both the Outland Award as well as the Lombardi Award for being the nation's best lineman. He won two championships and 31-1-1 during his three years as the Oklahoma's starting linebacker. He received a third scholarship in 1975. He was also named as an National Football Foundation Student-Athlete. Selmon received a bachelor's degree from the University of California in Berkeley. Lee Roy dedicated ten volunteer hours per week during the college. In Tampa the Buccaneers, he was a player for the Buccaneers for nine seasons, and eventually became an all-pro. He also began a career in business. He was hired in 1988 as an Account Relation Officer at Tampa's First Florida Bank. He was also involved with these organizations: Special Olympics Easter Seals Baptist Church Ronald McDonald House United Negro College Fund South Florida Institute Black Life Hall of Fame Bowl Committee. In 1982 the Junior Chamber of Commerce recognized Lee Roy as being among 10 of the most notable young males. Lee Roy, a 6-2-inch higher and weighing in at the hefty 256 pounds at college when he was player, commanded his team throughout 1975. In 1993, he became the athletic director's assistant at the University of South Florida. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1988. He was also named to the GTE Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 1994, and then the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1995. In 1989 the Oklahoma City Chapter National Football Foundation presented its Distinguished American Award Mr. Lucious Jr. Henry Bellmon is the Oklahoma governor who made this presentation.
